The Watery Depths
The mysteries of life, death and rebirth come into focus when the sun transits into the intense sign of Scorpio. While we have been focusing on relationships, cooperation and social niceties under the sign of Libra, we now take a hard turn in the solar cycle and dive into the blunt and cutting depths of watery Scorpio.
Social niceties take a back seat to honesty.
In this energy, as fall gives way and Sagittarius looms, where we will rage against the dying of the light, we are reacquainted with mortality and decay. The Day of the Dead looms. The days are ever shorter. Soon, our furthest point from the sun in the northern hemisphere will peak in December. And as it typically goes in the astrological story of the sun god, of which Christ is an iteration, at the point where we are furthest from the light (winter solstice), the light is born on earth (December 25th).
We are slowing and preparing for the long sleep that gives way to the light of the world… our own illumination.
Scorpio is co-ruled by Pluto (modern astrology) and Mars (classical astrology).
Pluto is the Lord of the Underworld and Scorpio is the sign of the Phoenix.
When the sun is in the depths of Scorpio, our subconscious and the shadow are in play.
Our insights and gifts are more profound.
Our speech is more blunt and cutting.
And as the fixed face of the eagle in several of Crowley’s cards, Scorpio, Death in the tarot, can give us wings. But just like the pupa is consumed within the chrysalis to sustain the butterfly in its transformation, those wings come at the cost of our “old” self.
Scorpio demands transformation, and your consent is not required. You can fight the process but few win out in hand-to-hand combat.
